Why Are Some People More Susceptible to Depression Than Others?


Hippocrates (Father of Medicine, Great ancient Greek Scientist) theorized that person are born into one of four primary temperament styles and each styles has its own unique outlook on life: Choleric (aggressive), Melancholy (analytical), Sanguine (emotional) and Phlegmatic (passive).

From this four, Melancholy is most depression prone. Person with Melancholy temperament style give tremendous attention to detail, but it create stress, anxiety, and depression.

Person with Melancholy temperament style are by their very nature sensitive, judgmental and critical. This temperament style become depressed due to they fail to achieve their own incredibly high standers. This depression often leads to suicide, violent nature and both.

Types of Depressive Disorders

Major depression (MDD)

It is also called unipolar depression and it is most serious type of depression. It is manifested by the combination of symptoms that interfere with the ability to sleep, eat, work study, and enjoy once pleasurable activities.

MDD illness can be inherited. Signs include changes in brain function in those person having low self esteem.

The treatment include medication, psychotherapy and in severe cases electroconvulsive therapy.

Dysthymia

It is mild chronic depression that lasts for 2 years or longer and is characterized by chronic symptoms.

The treatment include anti depressants or psychotherapy.

Bipolar Disorder (Manic-Depressive illness)

It is divided into two part, Bipolar I (Manic-depressive episodes) and Bipolar II (hypo manic - depressive episodes or cyclothymia)

It affect men and women equally and also run in families.

The treatment include mood stabilizing drugs like Lithium, carbamazepin, topiramide, and valproic acid and some antipsychotic like olanzepine.
