I read somewhere that some people actually use "depression" (I use quotes because I'm not talking depression in the clinical sense) as a coping mechanism, because it allows them to go through a range of emotions and FEEL something, at which point they can sort out their thoughts before leveling it out. It's not how your common man would deal with something, but that's why you're in a relationship with a woman, not a man.

What you want to do is let her know you're there if she needs you, and let her be. What you DON"T want to do is get as emotional as she is. That's a VERY bad idea. She needs you to add stabilization. You remaining calms allows her the comfort and freedom to spazz out and go through her range of emotions because she's in a "safe" place. If you're hyping the situation up by getting emotional too, not only do you make her uneasy, but you lose attractiveness because you're, well... acting like a woman.

This can be tough, because if you're like me, you hate seeing your lady upset--but honestly, sometimes you just have to let them cry it out. If I drop dead tomorrow she'll still have the same emotions to deal with for the rest of her life, so why should I make a habit of jumping in and being her emotional fixer?

Stand your ground if she's taking a bad day out on you, but outside of that, don't be afraid to just chalk it up as her needing some time to calm down and sort things out before coming back to the world. If you stop everything to "have a talk" about why she's feeling that way, you're setting yourself up for frustration. Just stay cool, let her know you have her back, and let her go on that ride by herself.

If you have a good woman, when she's back from that ride she'll be refreshed and thankful that you were there. Because if you did it right, you WERE there, even though you didn't go on that ride.

Being Diagnosed With Bipolar Disorder

It was 2009 and I was lying in bed unable to get up and start my day. This had become a problem for me the last few mornings. The thought of getting out of bed, getting dressed, and going to work caused me to burst into tears. I was severely depressed. This wasn't the first time I had experienced depression but this was the most extreme. All I could think about was suicide. I wanted to escape the overwhelming feeling of dread and doom.

I took a leave of absence from my job and was able to have my aunt keep my kids for a few weeks. Summer break was upon us so my little breakdown happened at the perfect time. I thought that taking a break from reality would help ease my depression but I was wrong. After a week of still feeling the same way I decided it was time to see a therapist. I couldn't stop crying and I wanted someone to pull me out of my crippling depression.

When I finally linked up with the right psychiatrist he told me that I was bipolar. But this diagnosis didn't come right away. The first psychiatrist that I had spoken with told me that I was just depressed because I had six kids. I tried desperately to explain to him that his assessment was wrong. My children had never been the cause of my problems. Don't get me wrong, my children do sometimes drive me crazy but they had never caused me to be depressed. I had always been my worst enemy. My children were the result of whatever was wrong with me. The psychiatrist, on the other hand, didn't agree. He told me that my problems were because I didn't live up to my parents' expectations and that was also causing me to be depressed.

I tried to explain to him how absurd what he was saying was. I was a very independent woman. I had been on my own since the age of seventeen. I lived in a townhouse and I had a very good job. My parents admired the qualities that I had. They had accepted long ago that they couldn't control me, and while they weren't proud that I had so many children without being married, they were proud by how I handled it. I was far from being depressed because of how my parents felt about me and if he were listening he would have known that I could care less what anyone thought. But still my explanation did not sway his opinion. He had judged me and that was that. He prescribed me some anti-depression pills and sent me on my way.

His actions caused me to go into a full-on panic attack. I felt hopeless. He was supposed to help me but instead he put me into a stereotypical box. After I left his office I sat in my car completely freaking out. I called my therapist and tried to explain to her what had happened. She calmed me down and set up another appointment with a different psychiatrist. It was the second psychiatrist who diagnosed me as being bipolar. I was relieved to have a reason why I was such a mess but I didn't really feel any better about how I was going to survive through the rest of my life.

I had always known that something was not quite right with me. As a child I was extremely withdrawn and nonchalant. My nickname was "Evil" but I wasn't evil, I just wasn't interested. As an adult I would have spurts of happiness followed by spurts of depression. Nothing in my life could remain constant for too long without me becoming bored. The boredom would spiral into depression and to escape the depression I would have to change something. I would either quit a job, change my hair, change my furniture around, or whatever else I could change.

I couldn't stand anything once I had become irritated with it. Irritation to me was a physical thing. I would literally feel like I was going to explode and I would start feeling like something was crawling around on my skin. Soon the tears would follow. Being stuck in any situation that irritated me was unbearable, I would have to be removed from the irritant.

And that wasn't the only bipolar symptom I showed. I once went into a store to buy bug spray and I came out seventeen hundred dollars poorer. But that was nothing compared to the six thousand dollars I once spent in a day. I had extreme risk-taking behaviors. Sex, alcohol, and shopping was how my riskiness was displayed. I was twenty-six with six children. I jumped from job to job and college to college, majoring in several different things.

I had moved nineteen times in the span of a couple of years. In my early twenties I was drinking a pint of gin a day. My riskiness caused me to be raped twice and subjected to an abusive relationship. I constantly put myself in dangerous situations and I loved to play with fire. I would do things I didn't even want to do but I couldn't make myself stop. I couldn't be faithful and I couldn't be consistent. I had zero control over my life and that lifestyle was starting to weigh heavily on me.

I self-medicated with alcohol using it to calm my nerves and make me less irritable. Alcohol helped to make things more bearable. The jittery anxious feeling was gone when I had a couple of drinks. I was less indifferent towards people and would be friendly. It also helped me to sleep better at night. But alcohol had its side effects. I never had just one drink, and that in itself was a problem. Another problem with using alcohol to self-medicate was that alcohol made my risky side that much more riskier. And even though while I was drinking I was less irritable, if I did become irritated I would snap. Luckily, that didn't happen often. I was pretty calm when I was drinking.

The bipolar diagnosis provided me with insight but it didn't fix or change anything. The worse part about the diagnosis was that I was told that I was a person who went through periods of extreme creativity but it was just my mind playing tricks on me. It made me feel stupid and it opened my eyes to the fact that many people didn't take me seriously. And while it was true that I did have spurts of creativity, that's all they were, they were just spurts.

Regardless how good my ideas were I would never complete them. This was part of my sickness they told me. But what I could never understand was exactly what they meant. Am I capable of all these wonderfully creative things I dream up or are they just dreams? Will I ever gain the discipline needed to be able to follow through or will I always remain another example of a person who is bipolar?

I guess we will have to wait and see.

10 Things Air Ambulance Providers Wish You Knew

Simply booking a medical flight is the patient's only responsibility, right? There's a little more to it than that. According to air ambulance providers in the U.S., many travelers sabotage their own flights in dubious ways. See what the experts think you should know:

1. Your whole family can't ride with you in the aircraft.

In the best-case scenario, you'll be traveling in a Leer jet. There is typically enough room for one or two guests and a small animal, besides the patient. On the other hand, if you're being transported via helicopter there will only be enough room for you. Pets, while comforting to have, are not always allowed either. Each provider will have special rules in place about the number of guests and should explain this to you upfront.

2. Transportation to/from the airplane can be arranged.

There are generally two types of service providers: emergency-only transport, and patient-centered care. The first will take you from point A to point B and transportation directly to the medical facility is a given. The second type focuses more on patient comfort during the flight and transportation is typically left up to the patient or family to arrange. Most providers have policies dictating whose responsibility it is.

3. The aircraft you choose matters.

Like we saw in the first tip, the size of the aircraft influences the number of passengers that can be safely accommodated. However, the hired aircraft also limits the pilot's abilities. Navigating bad weather, or travelling significant distances are not recommended for smaller aircraft. You'll need to be mindful of this when chartering your flight.

4. It's your responsibility to check for credentials.

It's a big misconception that all medical aircraft have the appropriate credentials (read more about this in tip #8). Air ambulances are typically afforded airport privileges to bypass security checks, but only if the organization has applied for and received the appropriate license. This credentialing process ensures regulations are strictly adhered to and are frequently revoked if providers do not comply. 5. Insurance coverage should never be assumed.

Most flyers think in terms of personal coverage when the topic of insurance comes and; and most know to check with their policies ahead of time. Medical malpractice insurance held by the provider is generally overlooked. This coverage is not required, nor are companies required to disclose this information to consumers. The Power of How by Tom Stone - A Businessman's Review

Pure Awareness.  GAP meditation.  AGAPE techniques.  Not commonly heard or used words in the business world.  But is it possible that a book like Tom Stone's "The Power of How" can actually be a powerful business book?  In this short book review, I'll review The Power of How from a purely business owners viewpoint and will discuss the business applications of this Tom Stone work.

Tom Stone is not your typical business book writer.  Though I've never met him, I imagine that he isn't even aware that he is a business book writer.  There are few "motivational quotes," and even fewer "business case applications" referenced in his books.  His most recent book, The Power of How, is no exception.  My first reading was from a purely "personal development" concern.  Like many, I believe that if I am not growing, I am dying.  The Power of How is a wonderful and powerful personal development book, that introduces some ancient but very timely techniques to live in a state of "Pure Awareness."  A state where your actions/thoughts/decisions are made from a place of awareness, not from past, possibly flawed conditioning.  Stone makes a powerful analogy that we humans have internal software that acts as our operating system.  Like computers, this software can be full of "bugs," "viruses," or simply be outdated.  Updating and cleaning out your software allows you to live a life of awareness.  Getting rid of these "bugs," is the main focus of this book.

My second reading was from the viewpoint of a business owner.  Like many business professionals, I am thirsty for information/strategies that will allow me to improve my effectiveness.  In short, I want to serve my customers better and make more money!  When in this mode, I don't have time for words like "pure awareness" nor time for meditation.  I want hard and fast tips for immediate improvement that I can implement right away and realize immediate benefits.   And though there are no obvious business improvement tips, this book is full of self-improvement, or rather, self-upgrade ideas, that, once fully integrated, will show positive results in my business life.  Understanding that our different life areas are all connected is key to realizing that The Power of How is a business book.

You could say that the Personal Development side of me is in conflict with the Business Owner side.  One strives for knowledge while the other for achievement.  However, regardless of which "mode" I am in, there is one irrefutable truth:  If the models on which I base my decisions on are flawed, my outcomes are likely to be flawed as well.  I take the same "mind" with me when I am negotiating a deal and when I am watching my son play baseball.  The same brain that designs effective marketing programs for my clients is also the same brain that makes decisions about where my family and I will vacation.  And if my mind or brain has some "bugs," then my decisions and/or designs will be flawed as well.  Perhaps they will be effective, but not as effective as they could be if my operating system was running at full speed.

Tom Stone's The Power Of How will most likely never see a boardroom, but is certain to find its way on several executive's desks.  Anyone who wants to improve their effectiveness should begin with improving themselves.  I strongly suggest to those that work for me that they read this book; telling them that it is imperative that they keep an open mind and realize that to improve their business effectiveness they first need to improve themselves!

As for me, I have experienced incredible results using this book, and have also seen unexpected improvements in my business as a result.  Removing the flawed programming and "updating my operating system," (two great analogies) has been one of the most dramatic life improvements I have made during my fifteen years of personal development.  Bravo, Mr. Stone!!!  Job, very well done

Clinical Depression - Which Treatment Shall I Go For

Depression - Bipolar Disorder

Depression is not a product of modern times, as is sometimes believed; the condition that goes by the name of depression today was known in the times of Hippocrates as well as the Old Testament and was a cause of worry for the ancient Egyptian medical community as well. In the absence of modern medical techniques, it was described as despondency, or melancholy and was believed to be caused by an imbalance in the so-called 'humors' of the body, which determined the individual's temperament and state of mind.

Depression occurs in various forms, the classification depending on the causes, intensity and duration of the condition. The main categories of commonly seen depressive condition are major depression, dysthymic or moderate disorder, unspecified depression and adjustment disorder. However, there is one form of depression that is very different from these conditions - bipolar disorder. This condition is unlike other kinds of depression because it is characterized by abnormal changes in a person's mood, energy levels and functioning pattern. It is also known as manic-depressive illness. While other categories of depression may stem from a variety if causes, bipolar disorder is generally attributed to genetic reasons. This condition often starts in childhood or adolescence and continues through life; hence, it is termed a chronic illness that, like diabetes or cardiac disease, needs long-term management.

The symptoms of bipolar disorder are drastic and severe mood swings, from very energetic, optimistic and enthusiastic to inactive, despondent and hopeless. These phases are called alternating episodes of mania and depression. A 'manic' episode is characterized by vigorous mental and physical activity, abnormally elevated mood and energy level, sleeplessness and distractibility. The afflicted person experiences extraordinary feelings of power, capability, euphoria and optimism and indulges in aggressive behavior; in fact, it appears as if the personality of the patient has undergone a change. This episode, which is also known as hypomania, may last for a week, to be succeeded by the 'depression' episode, during which the affected person feels helpless, dejected and worthless and is assailed by feelings of failure and self-doubt. This phase often triggers suicidal tendencies and many patients turn self-destructive.

Bipolar disorder obviously imposes a very severe strain on the patient's relationships with family, friends and colleagues; in many cases this manic depression results in loss of education or job, drug abuse, divorce and fractured family relationships. The problem with bipolar disorder is that it takes time to be diagnosed, because people tend to regard these behavioral abnormalities as psychological and temperamental, whereas they are actually manifestations of a biological problem. Any form of depression is caused by physical changes in the brain connected with imbalances in the chemicals called neurotransmitters that carry signals in the brain. Many patients enjoy the manic high episode and refuse to believe that they are suffering from any disorder and consequently refuse treatment. Delayed recognition of the condition is the biggest impediment in the treatment of bipolar disorder.

Effective treatment avenues are available for bipolar disorder; a combination of drug therapy and counseling is normally used to address the condition. The most commonly used drug is lithium, taken together with mood stabilizing anticonvulsants such as carbamazepine and valproate; however, the patient needs substantial counseling and family support to cope with the disease. Bipolar disorder is a life-long disease and needs continued therapy to control and prevent the recurrence of the manic depression episodes. In the United States, where about three million people suffer from the disorder, mutual self-help groups sponsored by the National Depressive and Manic Depressive Association (NDMDA) and National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) extend valuable support to patients and their families.

Suicide Prevention and Treatment, Part II

Suicide continues to be on the rise. Statistics are published to help manage needs, however, the stats around this phenomenon are nothing short of shocking.

For example, nearly 30,000 Americans complete a suicide annually - a number that keeps increasing - especially in the youth; there are twice as many deaths due to suicide than HIV/AIDS; between 1952 and 1995 suicide in young adults nearly tripled; over half of all suicides are completed with a firearm and over half of all suicides occur in adult men ages 25-65.

The highest suicide rates are among widowed males with medical issues, alcoholism, and 85 years old and beyond; it's the third leading cause of death for those 15-24 years old; the strongest risk factor for suicide is depression and this is compounded by substance abuse; according to the World Health Organization, by 2011, depression will be the number one disability in the world; an average of one person dies by suicide every 16.2 minutes.

There are three female suicide attempts for each male attempt as contrasted by four male suicides for every female completed suicide; in 2004 there were 811,000 suicide attempts in the U.S. Suicide prevention is best achieved by education, awareness and treatment. The earlier warning signs of suicide are often discernable if you are attentive.

For example: ideation (thinking, wishing or talking about suicide); anger; substance abuse; feeling trapped with a need to "escape"; feeling hopeless or helpless or both; withdrawal from family, friends, usual activities; increasingly reckless behaviors; intensifying anxieties; lack of purpose; increasing physical issues- especially chronic pain; dramatic shifts in mood; inquisitive about methods to die; preoccupied with death; contacting people suddenly that one has had a relationship with; getting one's affairs in order; giving prized possessions away; overt loss of interest in usual topics, people, etc.; actively obtaining weapons or means and suddenly appearing calmer even happier than prior appearances.

These signs and symptoms are among many others. Without exception, an actively suicidal person urgently needs to see a physician or mental health professional. If you are the first to see the warning signs of suicide start with asking questions. Questions need to be non-judgmental and non-confrontational to be helpful.

An example of some questions that are direct and reasonable are: do you have a plan how specific; do you have a serious intent; do you want to die, commit suicide? If so, when, today, tomorrow, do you know? Do you feel so badly that suicide is a serious option? These questions are examples of assessing risk in a supportive but direct way.

Do not ask vague questions as if talking openly about suicide will cause it. Calling 911 or escorting someone to the nearest emergency room is also quite appropriate when suicidal ideation is strong or when actual suicidal behaviors are occurring.

It's important to take signs, symptoms or plans for suicide seriously. Each reoccurring episode should be evaluated in the context of prior ideations, attempts and as a serious state of mind in the here and now.

If the person with suicidal thoughts or behaviors is a friend or family member, do not fear them being upset with you if you bring up the topic or call 911. If they get angry and decide to end your relationship, it's less tragic than them ending their life.

A person in psychic pain sufficient to utilize suicide as a viable option should not have their feelings dismissed or ridiculed. Attaching guilt or shame to their current state is counterproductive and dangerous.

A better approach is to listen intently, reassure them that professional help helps and is readily available and that their feelings are well understood and treatable. That includes for them.

Follow through with your attention and early interventions be that calling 911 or a mental health professional with or for the suicidal person or even accompanying them to their first professional contact - be it at the local ER or to a psychiatric facility or office.

Don't procrastinate, second guess or feel you're being intrusive. Safety first - all else is negotiable later. If you are the person with active suicidal thoughts go to the nearest ER or call 911 if you're already in active treatment. If you call or go to see your mental health professional be clear and forthcoming about your feelings or impulses.

Ask someone to assist you in doing all the above, eliminate weapons, means or any specifically harmful objects/opportunities, delay the impulses to self destruct and die using contingency plans that are preplanned and well established, and don't be silent as you may be just that for a very long time.

Treatment with a combination of appropriate and efficacious medications and a variety of talk therapies are well established and reliable methods to help ameliorate and alleviate many sources for suicidal thoughts and behaviors.

It's never a "one size fits all" approach to these life threatening states. A skilled, experienced mental health professional is the best source to assess risk and provide appropriate levels of care for these intense needs.

There is no shame or stigmata necessary to attach to these powerful times and feelings. Help exists, is effective, well tolerated, all with due respect and it allows life to be lived - not merely endured or forfeited. Please don't stay in the shadows, suffer in silent isolation and die. Emphatically - be counted and participate for another deserved tomorrow.

Being Childless - The Road To Happiness

I'm childless. There, that's out of the way. I'm not able to have children, not by
choice but by circumstance.

In my late teens and early twenties I desperately wanted children. I'd grown up
emotionally abused, and I thought that having a child would give me something that
I could love that was all mine. I wanted a football team!

When we are insecure within ourselves we look to outside sources to 'complete' us
such as relationships, children, work, or even volunteer commitments.

When women/couples cannot have children they can feel invalidated as a
relationship, and often marriages will fail because of the lack of children. If two
people cannot commit to each other without children, then there's usually not much
hope for a long-term relationship.

When a woman cannot have a child, such as myself, you can feel such overwhelming
grief at the time that it can be all consuming. You'll usually go through all sorts of
tests, procedures, invasions of intimate and personal space in order to try and have
a child.

There are many processes for the infertile. There is IVF, adoption, foster care,
permanent care placements or even surrogacy in some countries.

What do you do though, if, despite this overwhelming grief, sense of loss, and
desire to have a child, you start to ask if it is all worth it?

What do you do if you realise that you don't have that driving desperation to have a
child? You still have the hurt, the pain and loss, but you feel as if you should be
feeling more 'desperation?'

There isn't any magic answer. Each woman is unique in her determination to have a
child of her own. I've met many women who have gone through immense personal
sacrifice to have a child and they've had either the most tragic or joyous outcomes.

Women who are infertile and cannot have a child have to at some point in their life
become comfortable with this. There is no defining moment, no set point at which
this happens, but it must happen for a woman to start to heal her pain and move on
with her life, for there is life without children, and it can be a great life.

Life without children is not the scary movie scenario that women think it is. It's not
when they turn into hags and become the scary old lady down the street.

Life without children means not being tied down to schedules, not being tied down
to school holidays, car pooling for sports, extra curricular activities and the like.
You are free to pursue your own life, work and leisure activities.

You get to be the favourite Aunt.

You have time to do the things you want, when you want.

You get to hog all the easter eggs if you want. You get to eat that block of
chocolate all by yourself. You don't have to structure your working life around
school timetables. You don't have to volunteer for canteen duty. You can take an
arts class, do yoga, go to university, travel and do any damn thing you want to.

Yes, being childless has it's advantages. Many would say also that it's lonely, you
grow old alone and your name doesn't get passed on through the generations.

Big deal.

It took me about ten years to understand that not having children was a blessing. I
saw so many of my friends complain about their lives. I've seen so much abuse of
children around me by parents who didn't really stop to think about what a child
needed, or why they had the child in the first place. If I had the opportunity, I
probably would not have a child now, knowing what I know now, I know that my life
is richer and freer for not having children, and that I am a more well rounded,
developed and secure individual for it.

It doesn't take the hurt, pain and sense of loss away, which may sound like a
contradiction, but for women out there who have lived with their infertility and
childlessness for years, they'll understand where it comes from.

Enjoy being childless. Don't wallow in self-pity. Go out there and make something
of your life. You've been given an opportunity to be a free spirit without the
constraints of the school bell.

Your life is an open book and only you know how many pages there are to turn.
Each page brings new challenges and chapters in your life to explore and being
childless needn't be the end, but only the beginning of your voyage of self-
discovery. Who knows, you might actually like discovering who YOU are.

How to Deal With Depression

It is natural for a person to feel sad and blue in certain moments of his or her life. Various types of problems, death and loss of someone or something you truly love are just few of the reasons why you may feel sad, and it may continue to become depression if you are not able to overcome it. But worrying about being depressed will not help, as it can only aggravate the misery you are experiencing. Instead, if you want this kind of emotional dilemma to pass, there are several self-help ways you can follow on how to deal with depression. 1. Identify the signs of depression

During the period prior to 1930 artists used uranium oxide with their finish on glassware. This will show in the test. If it does nothing the work is recent and not antique.

The Great Depression, a Horrible Time in Our Economic History, the Best Time For Gold

The Great Depression was a horrible time in our economic history. Many people suffered, and many families were torn apart. The world had never experienced such an event and none still compares to it. Social Phobia - Social Anxiety - Living In Isolation

Growing up I'd never heard of Social Phobia or Social Anxiety. I was described as quiet, shy or reserved. Although the labels don't sound like anything too dreadful, I think most people would have been surprised to learn that I lived in my own private hell. Going to school everyday was a nightmare and to this day I still find it hard to explain the agony I went through. I became an expert at blending in - taking extra care never to draw any attention to myself. The mere thought of a teacher calling on me to answer a question could make me physically sick. Unfortunately I couldn't always avoid it and on occasion I would hear my name called from the front of the classroom. With burning cheeks and a tremble in my voice I would mutter my answer wishing somehow that I could disappear into thin air. I hated myself. I was a freak. I felt as though everyone was staring at me and secretly laughing. Why couldn't I just be like everyone else? From the moment I arrived at school in the morning until I was back in the safety of my home, I feared ridicule. Through my high school years anxiety took it's toll and I was plagued with stomachaches and digestive problems. I never talked to anyone about how I was feeling inside. I guess I thought they would think I was crazy and for all I knew, maybe they would be right.
