Dogs need to be walked and of course Sparkles was no exception. In fact, Sparkles, like most dogs, loved to be walked. I usually walked Sparkles three times a day. When I felt especially depressed, I walked him more than that. The combination of walking plus refocusing my thoughts on Sparkles really helped me to suppress my depressive symptoms. 4. Reduces isolation - Very few things in life are certain. One thing that is absolutely certain however is that as long as your dog is alive, he will always be your constant companion. Before Sparkles became part of our family, I would usually withdraw and isolate myself from everyone, including my wife,.whenever I had a depressive episode. If you have depression, I'm sure you may be all too familiar with loneliness and withdrawal. Believe me, having a dog around will change that. Once Sparkles arrived, my loneliness virtually disappeared and I isolated myself less frequently. After all, my wife enjoyed playing with the dog too, so we were able to do that together.

5. Reduces feelings of personal worthlessness - Once you own a dog, any feelings of personal worthlessness you might have felt during a depressive episode, should begin to erode, at least to some extent, rather quickly. After all, your dog will depend on you for virtually everything. That dependence should create a sense of purpose because you'll feel needed.

You've probably realized by now, that in order to enjoy the therapeutic effects of a dog, or any animal for that matter, you must like being around animals. Further, any animal that can be held, petted, or cuddled, can provide you with just about the same therapeutic effects as a dog.

Bipolar Disorder - A New Approach

The problem is with the ego. If you do not deal with the ego, you will never get to the real cause of bipolar problems. The ego is a compulsive thinker; about 98% of the thoughts in your head come from the ego. The only way for a thought to come from you is, if you make an effort to think, like when you plan, try to solve a problem, study or create something. You should be skeptical of the thoughts that come into your head.

There are 3 basic types of egos as each will tend to be dominated by one of three types of nervous systems, motor, sensory or autonomic. When the sensory nervous system is dominate, the ego has a lot of 'mental' energy. The sensory nervous system consist of incoming stimuli like sound, light, smells, touch and taste, that have impinged upon the senses, and travel from the external peripheral nervous system bringing information and moving inward towards the central nervous system. An ego with a strong sensory nervous system is very sensitive and can be easily overwhelmed by excessive noise, light, sound, hot spicy foods, and usually has a low threshold for pain. A cat has a sensory nervous system that clearly dominate the other two, and like a cat, the sensitive ego is going to be very curious or even nosy.

The sensitive ego can be so overwhelmed that it is constantly looking ahead to protect itself, to try to avoid being overcome with apprehension or fear. Imagining what could happen, the sensitive ego tends to worry and fret about what might occur in the future. Its mantra is 'What if?' Anxiety and fear become its problem. When the sensitive ego is in control, its thoughts will fill your head with worry, anxiety or fear about what can happen in the future.

When the motor nervous system is dominate, the ego has a lot of 'physical' energy. The energy is projected outward, moving from the central nervous system to the peripheral nervous system. They like to throw, punch, kick, run, speak, express and act. They tend to have a good memory because they are pulling data out from the central nervous system, and make good spellers. When 'memories' are pulled out from the past by the ego, it can bring feelings of regret, resentment, hurt, anger, guilt or hate. It relives the harm or hurt of an emotional nature. This can get the ego fuming with anger which can overwhelm you with ideas of vengeance. Anybody who spends a lot of time with thoughts about the past, is going to have to deal with a lot of anger.

When the autonomic nervous system (the viscera or internal organs) is dominate, it provides a lot of emotional energy. The social ego prefers to be with others than to be alone. It can party all night long as compared to the sensitive ego who could be exhausted after half an hour. The social ego tends to be good with people and good at managing people. It wants the power to influence and control others.

Herding animals like cows, pigs, sheep, elephants, and so on have a dominant autonomic nervous system. Herding animals have a lot of bickering and infighting among themselves to establish a social hierarchy. In the same manner, the social egos relationship with people and the self is judged and rated along a hierarchy. The ego ranks the self and others on this vertical, status scale, as being above or below the self, rarely on the same level, as better or worst, worthy or unworthy, etc.

When you are aware of the judgmental criticisms about others or the self, welling up in the dark abyss of the social ego's mind, do not go along with these critical attacks or be influenced by these critical judgments, especially when you understand the ego's lack of maturity and ability to discern the nuances of the complexity of life and people.

Rather than being concern with fear and anger, the social ego, more than any other type tends to be on an emotional roller coaster of ups and downs and highs and lows when dealing with life and people.

When they are on the emotional 'down' side, they can be extremely passive, apathetic, helpless, or depressed. Nothing excites or motivates them. They may not want to do anything but lay about. This may lead to emotional, physical or financial poverty, where they could easily wind up on welfare. This type is most vulnerable to becoming a hobo or a homeless beggar.

Their nonchalance insulates them from future fears and past anger issues, so they can easily get stuck in a rut and stop learning or growing. Since they think their life is just fine, they're unlikely to examine or explore new, exciting or beneficial areas of life. The social ego more than any other type of ego needs you to make more of an effort to compensate for its lethargy. Your responsibility is not to control the ego's anger or fear so much, as to endeavor to improve yourself by putting a spur under the ego's saddle to develop your knowledge base, your ability to be more loving, etc.

The emotional, excited, up swing, side of the social ego, finds them displaying a superior, haughty, conceited attitude, that I'm better than you, and be snobbish, exclusive, bossy, authoritarian, domineering or tyrannical.

The social ego's pathological problems will be emotional, namely of a manic/depressive bipolar nature. When taken to the extremes, when the ego is in control of the self close to 100% of the time, the ego can go from the grandiosity of an egomania, to the misery and despair of a deep depression.

During the hot blooded manic phase, the egos are in almost total control, making all the foolish decisions by which they are so plagued. Unfortunately the seductive euphoria created by these egos, who feel superior and godlike, are so enticing, that without understanding what is happening, they gladly surrender to these feelings of elation. And therefore surrender or go along with all the ideas coming into their head from the ego.

To overcome these problems, you need to be in charge of the self instead of the ego. You do that by learning how to censor the thoughts that come into your head and realize these thoughts are coming from the ego and not you. Learn to be skeptical of your thoughts, especially those that are critical of others, the self and the present situation.

Causes of Depression Disorder

Medical scientists have contributed a lot to our understanding of depression disorder but no one has still found out the mechanism which makes the brain unstable and cause the individual to become depressed. Diagnose Depression

Depression, either situational or clinical, is a diagnosable condition. There are a few simple steps to the diagnosis. The first is to decide why you think you are depressed. Do you no longer enjoy your hobbies? Do you find it hard to get out of bed in the morning, or to leave the house? Other symptoms include being tired all of the time, loss of appetite, crying for no reason and an inability to focus.

If these symptoms are present, then the next step is to take the Beck Depression Inventory. This simple exam is a series of statements that you rate from a scale of 1-5. It gives you a final score that then rates you from no depression to severe clinical depression. While this test is not perfect and should not be the sole element used in diagnosis, it can lead to one.

With symptoms in mind, and Beck Depression Inventory score in hand, the next step is to go to your primary care physician. Ask to talk with him or her and tell them of your BDI score as well as any other symptoms. They will most likely recommend a therapist as well as a psychiatrist. Depending on your score and symptoms, they might also prescribe some medication. The doctor will be able to classify your depression, however, to see if it is situational or clinical. If it is situational, the doctor will most likely only recommend a therapist for you to see. You may not yet need any medication to treat your condition.

1. Accept what you are feeling as "real". It is not an imagined state of being but an illness that can be treated. Recognize that you are in trouble and suffering. I realized that my ongoing symptoms weren't normal for my personality and temperament. I felt as if I were swirling into an abyss that I couldn't lift myself out of. This severely impacted my mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional well-being.

2. Confide in someone who will truly listen to you. This should be someone who can be fully trusted with what you share on the deepest level. In my case, my husband was actually a witness to what was happening with me. I could entrust him with my thoughts and knew he would "be there" for me, not matter what. Without question, he would provide much- needed daily support for the road ahead, no matter the many turns it would take to get me back on track.

3. Call your doctor to get the medical attention required. In addition to seeing a counselor, you may need to take medication also. This may be temporary or long-term, depending on your situation. I needed to see a counselor on a regular basis and was prescribed medicine at the same time. The combined treatment was most beneficial in my adjustment to understanding the depressed states I was experiencing and working to overcome this state of being.

4. Exploring an alternative means of healing can be most useful to complement the traditional medical route. You can also incorporate some self-healing methods too. I found that Reiki blended in beautifully with the counseling sessions and medicine in providing healing on another level.

5. Support groups are offered that you may wish to take advantage of. Make sure you are comfortable with the facilitator and those in the group. It is important that you feel safe and are in a healthy, positive atmosphere that is right for you. I was fortunate to attend a well- organized and supportive group. This helped me learn more about my depression and what others were going through. Tools were introduced that I could use each day toward my wellness. I was reminded of the importance to meditate daily and how to alter my thought patterns to the positive.

Can Anger Become Suicide? A Bipolar Patient's Point-Of-View

I believe anger can affect one's mind to the point of suicidality, based both on U.S. Statistics and my own experience. Let us focus through the lenses of some known facts prior to linking or imagining them to be either causal or attributable to suicide trends and statistics.

  1. 90% of all suicides result from clinical depression (often accompanied by substance abuse).

  2. Their are many human conditions and environments that foment clinical depression.

  3. The simplest definition of clinical depression is "anger turned inward."

  4. Suicide is essentially an act of anger against oneself.

  5. Anger must be mentally and physically purged in non-injurious and non-damaging ways.

  6. Clinical depression has been the #1 disability in the world since 2010 according to the World Health Organization (WHO). It is now the 2nd leading cause for disability claims in the U.S.

  7. The remaining 10% of suicides are usually situational and rapidly carried out.

Let us first address the 10% population. Intense, immediate and horrid situations can cause individuals to self-destruct. Here are four historical examples:

  1. Judas Iscariot plans and sells out Jesus Christ for 30 pieces of silver. When the terrible transaction is completed, Judas immediately goes out and hangs himself. In addition to the shame associated with his treachery, Judas likely suffers an instant and great anger at himself.

  2. Japanese Kamikaze pilots find themselves in a losing WWII conflict yet are sworn to honor the direction of Emperor Hirohito by calculatingly and dutifully crashing their planes into U.S. warships on suicide missions. These sorties are unique in that they are carefully planned yet offer little time or opportunity for clinical depression to set in during the short time required for them to complete their gruesome missions.

  3. Again in WWII, a concentration camp prisoner is forced to watch all of his family being slaughtered. In utter disbelief and grief he runs back to his bed, grabs a crudely whittled wooden shiv and plunges it into his heart-clearly a situational act of suicide.

  4. A rich financier first hears of his total loss of wealth during the Great Depression and jumps to his death from his 14th-story window. This is a fleeting, situational and unreasonable act.

It could be argued that a mass-murderer killing himself after his grisly act could have planned the deed or not, but usually the former is evidenced by a suicide note. The notion that males are more violent than females is supported when one considers that, as of 2012, the National Safety Council revealed suicide is the 6th leading cause of death for all Americans while it is only the 19th leading cause of death for female Americans. The fact that 40% of those who complete the act have made at least one previous attempt indicates that there is a process (like anger-driven depression) having taken place over time. That 90% of these may relate to anger-based depression is worth exploring.

Demographic factors for suicide, in descending order, include being white, American Indian, male, elderly or a combination thereof. Nearly 37,000 U.S. suicides occur each year accompanied by 500,000 attempts. Men are 4 times more likely to die by suicide than women and constitute 73% of all suicide deaths. As of 2001, self-murder rates per 100,000 Americans showed white males accumulating 19.5 suicides as opposed to a total of all other genders/ethnicities confirmed at 5.3 self-killings. Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for college students. One American dies by his or her hand every 14.2 minutes. The American suicide rate increased 1.6% between Y2K-2009.

Anger, violence and/or depression can derive from job loss, feeling trapped, loss of face or freedom, purposelessness, diagnosis of a terminal condition (the AIDS patient suicide rate is 20% higher than that of the general population), hopelessness, shame, guilt, humiliation, abuse at the hands of others, despair, legal stress, abandonment issues, loss-of-control, broken relationships, business or school failure, or psychiatric disorders. American Indian suicide rates are 2-3 times higher than any other American ethnic group. In the case of the American Indian, the anger at being relegated to life on a reservation and government welfare and a high rate of joblessness has sapped personal esteem and resulted in abuse, depression and substance abuse. All three are precursors for suicide.

The latest Centers for Disease Control suicide data date back to 2009, yet more recent studies, as of 18 January 2012, show the elderly suicide rate as 2.8% higher than that of the total U.S. population. Anger-driven depression and resentment among the elderly can easily result from loss of or alienation by family, failed dreams, impaired health and eroding mental and physical capabilities. Based on age alone, the elderly (65+ years) exhibit 16.1 suicides per 100,000 people relative to the overall U.S. population's self-destruction rate of 10.8 per 100,000 people.

A sharp increase of 28% in workplace suicides between 2007 and 2008 only were 94% male, 78% of whom were white and working primarily in management. Workplace technological and knowledge half-lives have likely increased under the pressure of employee obsolescence compounded by the unending demands of new technologies, changing personnel values and behavioral requirements, and pressures to achieve higher productivity.

Suicide claimed more U.S. Military lives than the Afghan war as of January 2010. America's military community to date has suffered an 18% increase in suicides over the same period last year-nearly 1 troop per day. And, for every such death, at least 5 members of our armed forces were hospitalized for attempting to take their own lives. Anger-driven depression in Afghanistan is reported as the conflict having less and less relevance and validity as the war drags on and by a Pentagon that settles for an undefined victory and reveals to our enemy our troop tactics and removal on a date certain as weighed against the loss of life and well-being of comrades-in-arms, both mentally and physically. Anger-driven depression also arises from combat exposure, PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), and personal finance issues creating feelings of failure and anger at oneself for not being able to resolve these issues. Increased incidences of sexual assaults and domestic violence have also resulted. The same goes for self-medication with either prescription or illicit drugs or alcohol, fear of being perceived as weak by superior officers, or damaging a promising military career despite the fact that all 1.4 million active-duty military personnel have been encouraged to seek help for any potential mental problems. Besides, there is an overall macho attitude and culture. Statistics fail to include the mental issues that are sometimes attendant with oft-observed military members' risky auto and bike driving, some of which are bound to be anger-fueled and suicidal. Afghan veterans were more than 75% likely to die in auto crashes than the general population and 148% were more likely to die in bike accidents. All applicable statistical data have correlated strongly with military suicide rates. With PTSD, the anger may simmer for months before exploding either in-country or stateside against others or oneself.

What, exactly, qualifies me to write about these things and draw the conclusions I have, to tie anger to most suicides?

Well, I've been there and done that.

In 1984 I was laid off at the peak of my career from an Inc. 500 company that had reached number 17 on that prestigious list. Apparently I never got over the anger portion of the grieving process that situation instigated. Two unfruitful years of seeking further employment certainly didn't help matters. I castigated others using my sarcastic wit and bit people's heads off when confronted by them. My underlying anger progressed deep-down, unbeknownst to me. Mild depression had set in and quickly descended into clinical depression. I was barely able to dress myself, moved at the speed of a three-toed sloth and suffered disrupted sleep and eating patterns. One of my two remaining friends introduced me to his psychiatrist and I was placed on Prozac.

My mood began to lift after about 4 weeks. But anger remained beneath my emotional radar. After relocating to another state and still jobless, my clinical depression turned suicidal. My spouse and her extended family apparently didn't understand the importance of my continuing my Prozac regimen. Only the thought of my three young children finding me slumped over dead in a pool of blood prevented me from slitting my wrists (the blade edge dimpling the skin on my wrist was the last thing I remember). I then slipped into catatonia and was whisked away to the hospital.

My deep-seated anger wasn't addressed until after my first hospitalization where I learned to process it and rid myself of it. I was taught to take out my anger in a non-injurious, non-damaging way. I purchased two pumpkins, drove to a remote area, set them on top of the car fender and proceeded to bash the living crap out of them with my high-school Hank Aaron baseball bat, cursing at the top of my lungs at all those who had ever ridiculed, cheated or abused me in any way and sending them to perdition. As comical as it sounds, IT WORKED! Not only was my anger completely gone, but I actually forgave many of those "evil" folks I once hated. And best of all, I've experienced zero anger toward all challenging issues ever since that defining 1991 event! This phenomenon has also been mirrored in many of my co-patients over the years. For whatever the reason(s) behind it, anger is simply not worth hanging onto. Anger can kill!

What if there were a way to head off anger before it even begins? Well, here goes:

Another driver cut you off while driving on the freeway (FACT). You are certain it was an intentional move on his part (BELIEF). That guy is a total schmuck! (THOUGHT). Grrrr! (ANGER). You drive up alongside him and fire off a digital salute (BEHAVIOR). There's a chance this act could put you in mortal danger.

The best place to but the brakes on anger is to control how we think about things, because we DO have power over our thinking.

The Holy Scriptures state: "As a man thinketh, so is he." (Proverbs 23:7)

In conclusion, I propose suicide rates can be lowered by positively addressing and dealing with anger either before or as soon as it begins to manifest itself. Whether a parent is training an angry child or an employee is responding to a dressing-down by the boss, the virtuous adult trait of personal responsibility must extend to healthy methods for ameliorating anger whenever it begins to take a foothold in one's life. If one hasn't caught it at the thinking stage, and whether or not it takes a primal scream, throwing fruit against a cinder block wall or a yoga session to deflect and resolve anger, one must have a plan of action with which to dissipate anger as soon as it begins to surface:

Don't nurture your anger overnight or spend even one more hour with it. Don't swallow it, store it and become depressed. Get it out and get rid of it!

By holding onto reality, expunging anger, thereby avoiding clinical depression, the threat of suicide (and perhaps homicide?) will be rendered nil.

Cognitive symptoms of stress in teens are memory problems, poor judgment, inability to concentrate, negative thinking, anxiety, and constant worrying. These are the different ways that stress can affect your teen's way of thinking.

Emotional symptoms of stress in teens are moodiness, irritability, short temper, agitation, feeling overwhelmed, sense of loneliness or isolation, depression, and general unhappiness. More often than not, emotional symptoms are the warning signs that your teen is under stress. If you observe any of these emotional changes in your teen, talk to him or her.

There are also physical symptoms of stress in teens. These are pains, aches, diarrhea or constipation, nausea or dizziness, chest pain, rapid heartbeat, and frequent colds. Because of stress, your teen can definitely experience any of these physical symptoms.

Last but not the least is behavioral symptoms of stress in teens. These can be any of the following: eating less or more, sleeping too little or too much, isolating one's self, procrastinating, neglecting responsibilities, use of alcohol, drugs, or cigarettes, and nervous habits like biting of nails and pacing. Like emotional symptoms, behavioral symptoms are usually the first signs of stress in teens. And to dull the effects of stress, teens usually turn to drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes.

These are the different symptoms of stress in teens. And as you can see, if these symptoms are left unchecked, these can really lead to more diseases and problems. For instance, the use of drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes can turn to addiction if it is not corrected. Isolating one's self can lead to depression. Emotional changes can lead to broken relationships. And cognitive changes can lead to poor performance in school.
