Depression Can Be Beaten, Know the Symptoms

Depression symptoms can grip us all every now and then when things don't go the way we want them to. These symptoms are usually temporary and we are able to bounce back quickly, however when these symptoms persist for more than a few days you should not ignore them. Loss of interest in activities you used to enjoy, feelings of sadness for no apparent reason, ignoring people and unable to function are all symptoms of depression. Ignoring your erratic behavior and thinking these symptoms would go away will only make things worse. Act fast on depression symptoms because if you don't it will be harder to get cured from this illness, especially when self-delusion starts to kick in.

The first thing to do would be to see your family doctor who would refer you to a reputable psychiatrist. For the psychiatrist to be able to make the proper diagnosis, you have to be truthful and tell him or her everything that you are experiencing.

There are different types of depression symptoms, ranging from mild to severe. Manic or bipolar depression is one of the most severe and is characterized by sudden and extreme changes in mood. A person is fine one minute and then suddenly and without any provocation can be agitated or in an elevated euphoric state.

Dysthymia or chronic depression is a mild form of depression and affects millions of people. The symptoms can linger for long periods of time although sufferers are able to function normally. It is believed to be due to changes in serotonin, a chemical that helps the brain to cope with emotions.

Cyclothymia, another form of depression, is more serious. It resembles bipolar and consists of recurrent disturbances of either elevated euphoria or irritable mood. The mood swings can occur very quickly for no reason at all.

Seasonal Affective Disorder, as the name suggests, is another mental disorder characterized by mood swings that occur at specific seasons, especially during the fall and winter months.

Postpartum depression is depression that overcomes a new mother after giving birth. There is a prolonged feeling of sadness and emptiness. There is also an overwhelming and uncertain sense of responsibility toward the new baby. It is not certain whether the physical stress of childbirth contributes to this form of depression symptom.

The sudden mood swings from happy to sad or angry in short order can be scary to most people and the road to sound mental health can be daunting. In spite of that, help is available and there are many depression medications available to control these depression symptoms. It is really up to you to take the initiative to seek help the moment you know all is not well with you. This is also the time to lean on family and friends, as well as seek support groups for support and encouragement.

Again, the road to recovery can be long, however if the patient follows the doctor's orders, take their medications as instructed as well as therapy sessions with a cognitive behavior therapist, there is no reason why these depression symptoms cannot be suppressed. Just set realistic goals and accept help from family and friends and before you know it life can be enjoyable again.
