How do you help someone with depression? There comes a particular time in our lives when we feel sad and down, these may be signs and symptoms of depression. The reason may range from death of loved one, an experience of betrayal, or loss of a job. The kind of down time we go through is situational and after sometime we recover and bounce back to life.
The signs and symptoms of this disorder may include extreme grief, loss of appetite, loss of interest in previously desired activities, feelings of helplessness, manic disorders and suicidal thoughts which one will need to treat. If the onset is severe, this scenario may last for weeks, months, and even years.
Also, signs and symptoms of this condition may include a severe case of bipolar disease. It is important to test to see if a person has bipolar disease, when trying to help someone with depression. It is situational, in that they may appear extremely happy at one time then fall back into chronic despair the next moment. Evidently, there may be an urgent need to help treat someone suffering from this illness especially if they are dealing with the chronic or even manic symptoms.
Whether it is mild or severe, the experience affects not only the person himself but the significant others in his life. As a parent, brother, sister, or friend there is so much that you can do to help someone with depression. First of all, knowledge is power. Learn about the illness, find out every major thing there is to know about it. Find out ways to test their reactive level in order to help with their treatment.
Pay particular attention to the signs and symptoms that the person you want to help exhibits. If you put yourself in the shoes of a depressed person you will understand how he really feels and what exactly he is going through. In this way, you can help him through the process of treatment all the way.
The only way to start dealing with or to help someone with depression is to help them accept the fact that indeed the problem exists, even if it is a mild case. However, going right up and making face to face confrontations will not really help someone with depression. In fact, it may only encourage denial and hence the signs and symptoms may worsen. Consequently, a patient and caring procedure is called for. Let the person talk openly and listen attentively to what he has to say. Listen some more and never make jokes to cheer him out of it in an attempt to make him feel better.
If there is anything that one can do to help ease the condition, it is to demonstrate all the emotional and physical support that you can. Tell the person how much you understand what he is going through and assure him that you will be there if he needs you. It also helps a lot when you get the person to do some physical activities (exercise, playing sports, etc.) with you to prevent him from thinking too much about his concerns. You may also ask the assistance of other loved ones and friends so that the person will get engulfed in love and understanding.
Finally, remember that there is only so much that you can do to help someone with depression. If you notice that the particular signs and symptoms have not been reduced but they are still very reactive, it is time to refer the case to clinical professionals who are experts in dealing with the disease.
So are there fast and simply ways to help someone dealing with this illness? While there are no fast and simple ways , there are consistent things you can do daily to help heal and prevent further onset of the illness.
