Daily Inspirational Quotes - Start Each Day With Inspiring Quotes

A great life consists of keeping your eyes on the distant mountains of your life purpose while continuing to put one foot in front of the other along the path of everyday life. However, it is all too easy to lose sight of the goal and get lost in everyday frustrations, angers and disappointments.

Including daily reminders of your life purpose in each day's routine can help keep your focus on your goals. Great reminders can include meditation, prayer, yoga, positive affirmations, and also daily inspirational quotes.

Inspirational quotes are typically fragmentary thoughts, taken out of context, that are best used to get you thinking about their underlying meaning and about the big commitments and values of your life. As an example, let's take a look at President Franklin Roosevelt's quote, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself - nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror." Those words were a part of President Roosevelt's First Inaugural Address on March fourth 1933, in the depths of the Great Depression. But is it necessary to understand the context in order to appreciate the thought and apply it in your life? Not only is the context not necessary, but in my opinion, it actually makes it more difficult to focus the inspiration on your own issues around fear.

Your fears are not about the depression of 1933, or about the Second World War, which many people think Roosevelt was referring to. Whatever your fears, it is inspirational to be reminded that fear, especially the formless fear of the unknown, is the true enemy of living a joyful and productive life.

As another example, consider Helen Keller's words, "Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing." Helen Keller overcame being deaf and blind from the age of 19 months to become an author and social activist. In that context, the quote has an extra "wow" factor - that someone bearing those burdens could still speak of an ideal life as a daring adventure. Nonetheless, as an inspirational quote to guide your own life, Keller's words, independent of their context, are a powerful reminder to focus on the big picture - what you came here to do.

There is often disagreement over the source of an inspirational quote. For example, Martin Luther King Jr. may or may not have said, ""Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase." Mark Twain quite likely did not say, "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do." Does it make an inspirational quote less meaningful or less inspirational because the author is unknown? For me, the value of inspirational quotes is mostly in the words, and how I can apply them to my own life, rather than in historical context. I find the Faith quote and the Twenty Years quote to be two of the most inspiring and motivating quotes I have found - whoever their authors may have been.

Inspirational quotes can be uplifting or motivational, spiritual or practical. Some of the most inspiring quotes, such as the Faith quote attributed to Martin Luther King Jr., share several of these qualities. For maximum impact on your life and goals, try to include a variety of types of inspirational quotes.

Consider beginning the practice of starting each day by reading and contemplating inspirational quotes.

What Is Good For Fighting Off Depression?

Depression is not a sign of weakness. It is a normal reaction to certain events that happen in our lives that we don't like and which we have no control over. It is normal to get depressed once in a while when the situation so warrants it. But of course it's totally another thing when you get depressed more often, sometimes with no particular reason at all, or when your depression comes to the point when your health, work performance and relationships are already compromised. If you don't want either of this to happen, consider these depression busters:

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids. You might have heard about Omega-3 fatty acids too often. These essential fatty acids have always been linked to heart health, but studies are suggesting that these are very helpful in warding off depression, too. Eating fish, therefore, will be good for depressed individuals, but experts warn not to do it every day as fish may be contaminated with toxic ingredients. To be safe than sorry, take Omega 3 supplements or Fish Oil with Omega-3 supplements.

  • Sunshine. As studies show that more people tend to get depressed during the cold months experts suggest that a little bit of sunshine every morning will help keep depression away. But of course, you can't stay too long out in the sun without protection. A good time to enjoy it is before eight in the morning. At 9am, the heat starts to sting the skin already, and that kind of heat will do you more harm than good.

  • Vitamins. Vitamin B-complex, Vitamin C, and Vitamin D all help to improve brain and nerve function and increase the production of serotonin.

  • Exercise. A 15-30 minute jog around the plaza or your very own neighborhood can improve your mood. You may not feel like doing it, but you have to force yourself. Once you get into the habit of exercising every morning, you'll begin to notice that you are not getting depressed often anymore.

  • Meditation and Deep Breathing. Meditation and deep breathing exercises can also lift your mood up while calming your nerves and bringing your stress levels down at the same time. Try this early in the morning or at night before you sleep.

  • Good Nutrition. Don't let depression ruin your appetite. Eat anyway, even if you don't feel like to. But make wise food choices. Make sure to include fruits, vegetables, and walnuts in your diet. Rather than take comfort in chocolates and junk foods, munch on vegetable sticks instead. Carrot sticks, cucumber and apple slices (minus the mayo dip, of course) are great companions during snack time. Never skip your meals. Have 5-6 small meals a day, instead of 3 big meals. It's important to go easy on your stomach as a sluggish metabolism can set off depressive attacks. Avoid fried and fatty foods, then, and too much sweets.

  • Talk. Verbalize your thoughts and your feelings. Don't keep them in. Talk to someone you trust - your best friend, partner, parent, relative, anyone. It's easier to cope with depression that way.

  • Express yourself. Fight depression through art. Doodle, draw, dance, paint, write. Let your imagine run wild. Be creative in coping with depression.

  • Hobby. Getting a hobby keeps your mind off a lot of things, including depression. If you are immersed in a project, you may even forget that you are actually feeling sad or low at the moment. Think of something you've always wanted to do and get right on it. It's never too late to start anything, you know.

Feeling low? Try these depression-busters and kick depression out of your system!

Where Does Workplace Mobbing Get Started?

Workplace mobbing can best be described as two or more people that target an individual to bully, harass and make their working atmosphere and their personal life totally undesirable. Research has shown that bullying and mobbing start in a child's early years of development and continues into their adult life.

We have all heard about or even experienced that playground bully in school that bosses around the other kids or takes their lunch money every day by way of intimidation. They always have a small group of other kids that are followers who laugh and taunt the target of this bullying.

This is where the mob mentality is developed which persists into adulthood and ultimately into the workplace. These same personalities that caused so much stress in childhood and developed the organizational skills to gather a mob have progressed into the workplace as bullies not to mention what they do in their personal relationships.

Workplace mobbing can be a particularly unhealthy environment to be in especially if you are the target of the mob and its leader. It can lead to not only psychological problems but actual physical ones as well. There is a much higher stress level involved with being the victim or even friend of a victim which is extremely unhealthy and can cause all kinds of physical ailments such as persistent headaches, stiff necks, manic depression and even cancer and heart attacks.

If you find yourself the target of this type of workplace harassment you need to take it to your upper management, HR department and immediate supervisor to put an immediate stop to it. Your psychological and physical health depend on it. Our workplaces are stressful enough without the addition of being bullied by a bunch of other people wanting to be a part of the bully's group.

Manic Depression Symptoms and Natural Remedies

Manic depression is also known as bipolar affective disorder, or simply bipolar. It is a form of mood disorder in which the subject suffers wide mood swings between extreme elation (mania) and extremely low depression. It is a serious condition that first occurs in either gender at the age of 18-24. The condition can be triggered by medical illness or stress.

What are the symptoms of manic depression, and how can it be distinguished from general depression? The first sign is that the depression involved is more than just feeling temporarily down, but is deeper and more serious than that. The subject is unable to cope with normal everyday problems and the depressive state lasts longer.

Symptoms of the Depressive State

Here are a few other symptoms that you can expect to be exhibited by a manic depressive:

  • The depression and feeling of unhappiness remains and can't be shrugged off.

  • The subject will lose interest in what is going on around, and will feel no enjoyment about anything.

  • A feeling of guilt and excessive worthlessness.

  • Unable to make decisions.

  • Unable to focus or concentrate on anything.

  • Sleeping excessively or an inability to sleep.

  • General tiredness.

  • A disinterest in sex.

  • An inability to handle crows of people.

  • Unable to function at work.

  • Unable to see any future.

  • Restlessness and fidgeting.

There are others, and most of the above are also symptoms of general depression. However, what distinguished someone suffering clinical depression and somebody with bipolar affective disorder is the rapid swing from the depressed state to elation, otherwise known as mania. So what are the symptoms of the manic state that distinguished between general depression and manic depression?

Symptoms of the Manic State

Having been depressed, the patient can then spend a week or so in a hyper manic state. Sometimes the subject will behave strangely and lose any sense of reality. They will be unable to make proper decisions, and in fact behave in strange ways that are both embarrassing and dangerous. Some of the outward signs of the manic state are:

  • An apparent lack of sleep.

  • An exceptionally good mood - a euphoric state where they have a profound sense of well-being within themselves.

  • They will talk quicker and louder than normal, and try to keep up with their racing thoughts.

  • They may come out with unattainable grandiose ideas that are unrealistic to achieve.

  • A lack of inhibitions that may lead them to very inappropriate behaviour well outside their normal character.

  • Euphoric delusions and sometimes even hallucinations that underline their excessive believe in themselves.

  • Increased sexual drive, and an increased need to spend money quickly.

  • Very dogmatic, provocative and aggressive, particularly when people disagree with them.

In fact, the manic state is practically the diametric opposite of their character in the depressed state. It is a form of Jekyll and Hyde situation, though not in the sense of schizophrenia where mood changes are not associated with the accompanying depressive or manic states. Also, manic depressives can go long periods between bouts of depression and mania. Nevertheless, the two have occasionally been misdiagnosed as the other.

Treatment for Manic Depression

The traditional treatment for the depressive aspect of manic depression is by antidepressant drugs, while manic episodes are treated using antipsychotic medication. Medication that helps to stabilize mood may also be used, examples of these being Valium and Tegretol. However, the treatment most commonly given in this respect is lithium.

Each of the various drugs have side effects, and it makes sense to use one or more of the natural herbal treatments that have been shown to be at least as effective as the drugs above with a minimum of half of the adverse side effects. Here are some herbal treatments that have been successfully used in treating manic depression, or bipolar disorder.

Herbal Treatment for Manic Depression

Herbs are used by many people to treat their manic depression, often because they could not tolerate the side effects of the regular drugs or perhaps because of a distrust of artificial drugs. Whatever their reason, they do take them, even though most are not as effective a regular drugs and take longer to be absorbed into the body and to have an effect.

Here are some typical; herbs that are used for manic depression. Keep in mind that there are two aspects of dipolar affective disorder: the depressive and the manic stages, and any remedy or treatment must deal with each of these. A herb that can help with depression (there are several of these) may not be able to handle the manic behavior of the subject.

It has been reported by the University Of Maryland Medical Center that herbs are effective treatment for depression and have fewer side effects, but not much mention of the manic condition.

St. John's Wort

St. John's wort is one of the most powerful herbal treatments available for depression, and is at least as good as the best prescription drugs, if not better. With significantly fewer side effects it is an excellent treatment for the depression part of manic depression. However, this is a serious condition, and while it is very effective with mild to medium depression, the severe form of depression brought about by bipolar disorder is a challenge and you must take the herbal treatment every day without fail. It might not cure the condition but it should be able to contain and stabilize it.

Amoryn

Amoryn is a good herbal treatment for anxiety and sadness. It contains hyperforin, also present in St. John's wort, and so has a similar effect. The main effect of hyperforin is to increase the availability of serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine in the brain. These are neurotransmitters than help you to feel good about yourself rather than depressed.

Valerian and Passion Flower

Valerian is a strong herbal treatment for insomnia, and helps those suffering stress, anxiety and depression to get to relax and get to sleep. It also works to reduce your anxiety, but should be taken every day, and at the same each day. Because it is calming valerian is good to take during the manic stage of bipolar affective disorder. Passion flower is another possible herbal treatment during this stage since it too is calming and relaxing.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

These constituents of fish oil may not strictly be herbal, but they are natural and while not a rapid solution to manic depression, it does reduce your depressive feelings over time if taken regularly.

There is no magic pill for manic depression - if there was everybody would take it and the disorder would no longer be a problem. However, there are natural remedies, most of them herbal, which can help you too feel a lot better with the potentially nasty side effects of pharmaceutical treatments.

Anxiety and Depression - Fighting the Fight

Anxiety and depression can some of the most difficult human conflicts to go through. You're left weakened from the inside out and often the chances of totally curing your illness seem bleak at best. Now you may be saying to yourself that anxiety is a totally different problem than depression and in a way you are right but they are so closely related that often times when a person suffers from one they suffer from the other.

Depression is a medical condition which can affect a person both mentally and physically often causing severe mood swings or chronic physical pain while anxiety can become so great that a person loses their ability to breathe. Often times a person who is suffering from an anxiety attack will have difficulty breathing describing the feeling as though someone were sitting on their chest. One of the most common prescriptions handed out for anxiety is Xannax. Unfortunately many people develop a chemical dependency on this drug as it is highly addictive. It ranks in near the top of prescription drugs most likely to be illegally sold on the street.

Treating just anxiety would do very little for the person as the depression would be left to run free. The symptoms of depression are too many to list but often time people associate a feeling of sadness with being depressed. This is partially true as many people will feel depressed in life especially after a tragic event such as the loss of a loved one but clinical depression is much more than that. Whereas a healthy brain can adjust to these feelings of sadness and overcome them a person suffering from depression will not simply be able to overcome the symptoms. They may retreat from the world missing social events or activities as well as completely cut off contact with friends or family. They in a sense withdraw to their shell.

The depression can bring on unexplained physical pain or fatigue which lends itself to the reason a person may not feel like getting out of the house and doing anything. A person suffering from clinical depression may spend 20+ hours in a bed only getting up to use the bathroom and perhaps eat something. They are constantly bombarded with feelings of hopelessness and often may ask themselves what the point of living is. Their dreams and hopes dashed, this person may become suicidal or even homicidal.

One of the most important things for a person suffering from depression to realize is there is help. Different types of treatment include seeking professional help such as counseling and could also include being administered prescription drugs to help combat the symptoms of depression. Lesser known alternatives include using herbs to treat the illness.

Regardless of which route a person chooses to take in their fight against anxiety and depression there are treatments available that show high success rates. There is no reason to live with the pain of these illnesses and absolutely no reason to have to live with the panic attacks that come along with them. Everyone has the right to feel comfortable inside their own body.

How Krill Can Help Mood

Krill has been studied for over twenty years by various researchers in various countries. Many of the studies done on Krill involve the effects of Krill's high amount of DHA and EPA on the brain and mood in general. Lack of DHA and EPA in the body and brain has been linked to mood disorders, such as depression.

In countries and areas where seafood is a dietary staple, there is a much lower incidence of depression and other mood disorders than in areas where seafood is not a dietary staple. The reason for this is that DHA and EPA are important to brain and nervous system health. The brain is made up of roughly thirty percent EPA and DHA, but the brain does not make these substances. They must be absorbed through the diet. Seafood is an excellent source of these substances.

Patients being treated for clinical depression and bipolar depression, also known as manic depression who were given Krill oil supplements showed marked improvement in mood. Krill has even helped the most severe cases of depression, where psychosis was present.

Fish oil supplements were recommended just a few years ago for the same reason. Fish oil, however, can be contaminated with mercury and PCB's because they swim in contaminated waters and they eat other fish which are also contaminated. Krill oil is forty eight times more potent than fish oil, and carries no such health risks. Krill oil is easier for the body to absorb than regular fish oil, and does not upset the stomach as is so common with fish oil.

Krill has been studied for over twenty years, and its potency and effectiveness has been well-proven. Krill oil supplementation can lift and stabilize mood. Krill will stabilize mood faster and better than regular fish oil. The high DHA and EPA content of Krill is known to boost and stabilize mood in a faster, safer manner than regular fish oil. With continued use, many people have experienced remission of their mood disorder, and stabilization of mood.

The brain does not produce EPA and DHA by itself; it must absorb these critical substances through the diet. The fastest safest way for anyone to get these substances into the body and thus the brain, is through supplementation with Krill oil. Many nutritionists, psychiatrists, and other health care professionals consider Krill to be the best supplementation choice for anyone to ensure a healthy, happy life.

4 Tips to Avoid Postpartum Depression - Pay Attention to Yourself

Over 80% of women experience mood instability during the postpartum phase, the mildest of which is called the "baby blues". Symptoms of the baby blues include mood swings and crying, which fades relatively quickly. However, in some cases, baby blues can progress into Postpartum Depression, which occurs in 10% to 20% of postnatal women. Postpartum Depression is a moderate to severe depression that occurs in a woman after giving birth. In very rare cases, Postpartum Depression can lead to Postpartum Psychosis, a very serious illness that involves hallucinations and delusions, among other symptoms. By paying close attention to your body, you can significantly reduce the likelihood of developing Postpartum Depression.

The following are tips to help in avoiding Postpartum Depression:

1. Rest, rest, rest: This is much easier said than done, right? However, fatigue is a major contributing factor in the development of Postpartum Depression. Women should rest when their baby is sleeping. This is not the time to do the laundry, clean the bathroom and wash the dishes. In fact, try to do these things while your baby is awake, calm and alert. Find a safe place, nearby, for them to stay while you do the household chores. Better yet, elicit help from your partner, friend or family to get the work done. You can, instead, try to use this time to eat or bathe; a baby can go with you into the bathroom and stay safe in a portable car seat, cradle or Pack 'n Play. Common signs of sleep deprivation include poor concentration, memory loss, social ineptness, tiredness and irritability (many of which are also signs of depression).

2. Proper Nutrition: It is no secret that fatty foods and empty calories are not good for the postpartum woman (or anyone for that matter) but did you know that certain healthy foods can help to improve your mood almost immediately? The brain is highly responsive to the foods we eat. In fact, the neurotransmitter, Norepinephrine, which affects your mood, is regulated by Vitamin C. Oranges, strawberries and other citrus fruits are rich in Vitamin C. Red peppers and bell peppers contain even more. Eating one of these fruits or vegetables can instantly elevate your mood. Reach for a piece of fruit as opposed to a fatty snack. Don't forget your green, leafy vegetables (easily obtained in a bag of salad) and be sure to drink adequate amounts of water; stay away from caffeine and soda pop.

3. Lower Your Stress Level: Again, this is easier said than done. However,

a. For money issues, when increasing income is not an option, lower your spending (check out the book, The Complete Tightwad Gazette, by Amy Dacyczyn. It is full of tips on easy ways to save and cut back on your spending).

b. If possible, distance yourself, at least temporarily, from stressful relationships.

c. Try not to take on too many activities and commitments. Now, more than ever, is a time for you to put yourself and your immediate family first.

4. Make Quadruple Batches of Meals: When taking the time to make a meal, increase your effort by a relatively small margin and make four batches instead of one. Have the second batch as leftovers and freeze the other two batches for a quick, already-prepared, healthy family meal. Even when you are making a sandwich, make two or three; put the other ones in the refrigerator and they are ready for you to consume within the next few days.
