ADHD Vs Bipolar Disorder in Children

It is estimated that three to five percent of school-age children suffer from the disorder known as ADHD while less than one percent of children in this same group have bipolar disorder. It is common for the small percentage of children who have bipolar disorder to receive the misdiagnosis of ADHD as some of the symptoms are similar and ADHD is more common, however, the forms of treatment given for the ADHD do not work for the bipolar disorder. In some cases, children may have both adhd and manic depression.

Primary Difference between ADHD and Bipolar

One of the issues when it comes to making a diagnosis between ADHD and bipolar disorder is that there are a few symptoms that are quite similar in both disorders which include lack of impulse control, short attention span, and hyperactivity. However, there is one of the primary differences between these two disorders.

Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder where as ADHD is an attention and behavioral problem. Another difference is that the "episodes" with the symptoms of bipolar tend to occur less frequently while the symptoms of ADHD tend to be more chronic.

Anger and Behavior Differences of Bipolar and ADHD

With ADHD, when a child experiences anger this is typically out of frustration or overstimulation and any destructive behavior is unintentionally done or careless. When the symptom of anger in manic depression occurs, the destructive behavior is typically done intentionally and this emotional state of anger tends to last longer for perhaps up to two hours while children with ADHD can generally be calmed down within a much shorter period of time.

Another symptom of bipolar disorder present in children which is typically not present in ADHD is psychosis which manifests itself in unrealistic thoughts such as believing things like they truly have the ability to fly or they posses some form of "superpowers".

Can Green Tea Fight Depression?

Researcher at the Tohoku University located in Japan recently published a study in Clinical Nutrition showing that when older subjects drank green tea they had a lower incidence of depression symptoms than their non tea drinking counterparts.

1,058 women and men who were 70 years or older residing in Sendai, Japan participated in the study. The scientists evaluated depression based on the Geriatric Depression Scale. After the subjects took a dietary questionnaire the results were analyzed for the frequency and type of tea they consumed. Blood samples were then analyzed for a major marker for inflammation, C-reactive protein.

27% of men and 29% of women who participated in the study fell into the range of experiencing mild or sever depressive symptoms. After adjusting the data for other risk factors those who drank more than 4 cups of green tea each day had a 44% lower rate of experiencing depressive symptoms. In regards to sever depressive symptoms those drinking 4 cups of tea had a 52% lower adjusted risk.

The researchers hypothesized that the tea's anti-inflammatory properties were responsible for the increase depression risk. But, the study was unable to show an association between the subjects green tea consumption and C-reactive protein.

They then proposed the anti-stress component of tea, the theanine content, may explain the reduced depression findings. Theanine is an amino acid in green tea. It has the ability to penetrate the brain-blood barrier, which could cause increases in serotonin and dopamine; two compounds associated with improved mood and reduced stress.

Although they aren't positive why, the researcher have found a link between lower risks of depression and the consumption of 4 cups or more of green tea a day. They are looking to do another study to further examine whether or not the theanine is the spark that may be effective in the treatment and prevention of depression symptoms in again patients.

Until then keep drinking green tea, because it has a lot of other health benefits that we often talk about.

Because, Looking and feeling Old is Optional.

4 Steps to Stop Depression Now

Let me ask you a simple question, Are you feeling very sad and down that you feel very sluggish and troubled to do important activities for you? If you are feeling like that for a long period of time already, then you probably are depressed. Depression should not be taken for granted because if it lasts longer, and becomes severe, your life will be greatly affected. You must therefore, stop depression immediately.

What are the symptoms of depression anyway? Here is a list of the common symptoms that indicate depression:

  • Feeling very negative towards one's self.

  • Only seeing the bad aspects of things and thinking that you have no hope of solving any of your problems.

  • Becoming uninterested in doing activities that are normally enjoyable for you.

  • Having changes in your appetite, weight, and sleep pattern. You may either have significant weight loss or gain, or you develop insomnia or hypersomnia.

If you have these symptoms, you must consult a doctor and ask for treatment options. It is important to stop depression before it becomes severe. Here are 5 ways you can consider:

  • One way to stop depression is by having psychotherapy. Through this, you will be able to talk out all your frustrations, worries, sorrow, and unhappiness to your therapist, and at the same time, your therapist will be teaching you ways on how to deal with such kinds of feelings in order to get rid of depression eventually. They would also be looking for the main cause of your depression through your words and when that cause has been discovered, the therapist will address that matter.

  • Another way on how to stop depression is by medications. Although antidepressants can relieve you from symptoms of depression, effects do not last for long. Moreover, there are possible side effects that you would not want to suffer from, and it can lead to drug dependence or addiction.

  • Herbal remedies can also help alleviate the symptoms of depression. Through the use of natural herbs and extracts such as St. John's wort, herbal medicines can help alleviate the symptoms of depression.

  • Homeopathic treatment is a good way to stop depression. Basically, homeopathic treatment is a holistic type of treatment. It makes use of homeopathic remedies and lifestyle changes. Homeopathic remedies are like herbal medicines with regards to use of natural herbs like St. John's wort and Passion flower. However, homeopathic remedies include a more careful dilution of these herbs, making it more effective. In addition to these remedies, homeopathy will also teach you to adjust your diet (avoiding substances such as caffeine) and include exercise (as this would regulate your body's hormones better) in your routine. Overall, a combination of these three is very effective in dealing with depression.

Now that you know four ways to stop depression, it is your job to make use of the information for your own benefit. Remember, do not let anything prevent you from stopping depression, or else, depression will stop you.

Do You See Your Life Target?

Sometimes we work too hard and get overwhelmed by our businesses, bills, marriage troubles, kids' problems and so on and so forth. This exhausting stuff usually piles up with age, starting from marriage or a day job, after you graduate a college. Only think about it - when you were a student, you would come from your class, have a snack, do (or sometimes don't do) your home tasks and voila - you're free as a bird until the next morning. No kids, no wife in your whirling around - just your best friends where you would party until dawn or some favorite occupation or anything you want to spend your time on. As I look at myself now, I hardly find any time for myself, except when I am writing some articles, like now - the baby has to be taken care off, bill have to be paid, I also have to work somewhere. I must do some shopping, some in house repair works, I have to repair my car from time to time, I also have to pay attention to my wife and share some time with her. Besides, we have friends, mothers, fathers and the like who also have to be visited.

Anyway, my point is this - we are so stuffed with the troubles and worries of this life that we simply forget what we are living for. What is your purpose in life? Is it just to graduate, have a tiresome day job and make some kids? What about your dreams, your vision, your heart? Are you doing what you should be doing? I like one life quote about the activity by some philosopher. He said, that only a fraction of people are doing what they were called to do, what they are best at. The rest are doing something which they either hate doing or are more or less indifferent about it.

"Go with the flow" according to some song, I have heard. If that's you, I guess some refreshing thoughts and ideas might stir you up, freshen you mind and clear your life target. I would recommend reading some good books or just some good life quotes, if you don't have the time for the first. You have only one life here and hoping merely to endure it to the grave is pathetic to say the least. You have your unfulfilled dreams, wishes and your life purpose, which should be your prime target. My purpose is living this life to the fullest according to what my heart and spirit tells me and bringing some happiness to other people - the closest ones first. Love God and love your neighbor. Then strive for your dreams and the things you wanted to do all your life (and which are doable). Then find peace in your heart.

That's what it's all about, at least in my humble opinion.

Adrenal Fatigue Testing

Exhaustion and weariness is one of the popular and the most frequent rants among all the adult patients. If you have the symptoms such as the following: tiredness, frequent influenza, fearfulness, allergies, arthritis, anxiety, depression, reduced memory and difficulties in concentrating on one topic, insomnia maybe, or the fact that you are always worn-out, you could very well be suffering from a the infamous case of adrenal fatigue.

The General Symptoms

The Adrenal fatigue has a wide variety of non-specific yet often unbearable symptoms. The beginning of this disease is often sluggish and sinister. Patients are told and often forced to believe that they are stressed and need to learn to just relax more. Indeed, it is a known knowledge that stress kills to a great extent.

But, the ultimate question is how does it kill? And, what are the solutions offered to address it? Allergy and sensitivities to dietary or ecological substances can act as a body weight that contributes eventually to the Adrenal Fatigue.

It is very important to do away with or reduce the end product of these so that we can restore a healthy adrenal function. The lab tests listed on this page may help you determine the following tests can tell you if you have adrenal fatigue or not.

Gastro Test

Gastrointestinal test is excellent for people suffering from upset stomach, ulcerative colitis, Chron's disease, along with irritable bowel syndrome. This test is especially made for detrimental pathogens such as yeast, parasites, worms and bacteria. It also tests for small intestinal and colon inflammation, pancreatic enzyme production, and food intolerances to soy, dairy, egg and gluten, which are all upsetting to your stomach.

Hair Analysis Testing.

This can tell you which are the minerals and vitamins your body really needs at the moment. Not only that but also this test may also tell you if you have toxic metals such as aluminum, lead, copper, or mercury. This is a helpful test for people with anxiety problems, ADHD, seizures, panic attacks, hyperactivity, sleep problems, even people working in the area of toxic metals, or those who simply want to know what minerals and vitamins does their body needs.

Environmental Testing

The test is called the test for environmental allergy test. It is a sensitive blood test that somewhat precisely detects direct hypersensitivity/allergy reactions to environmental allergens that take place in just minutes up to a few hours after your exposure. However, this does not involve any skin testing. There are no unfavorable reactions since the test is done to your blood.

Food Testing

This test is called Food allergy test. It is a series of sensitive blood tests which correctly perceives instant and delayed hypersensitivity/allergy reaction to food. The delayed reactions can happen within 12 hours to weeks subsequent to exposure. It's often the deferred type of reaction which is tough to take down for the reason that symptoms might not appear until a couple of hours or days after you've eaten the substance that you are allergic to. This kind of food allergy test is the only one that could give you this kind of information.

The ELISA/ACT LRA can gauge sensitivities to molds, medicines, additives, preservatives, spices, condiments and herbs as well as many other edible foods. A diverse combination of tests is available, enabling you to decide as few as forty food items or maybe as many as two hundred plus.

Occupy Wall Street and the Storming of the Bastille

Jean-Jacques Rousseau explained the "Social Contract" in his 1762 Treatise. He explained that there are certain unwritten understandings by which everyone in a society operates. When pressures from all sides cause dislocations in society they can cause revolutions. As the French and American Revolutions and the Arab Spring have shown us, changes often come only with significant upheaval. These changes often occur when the majority finally says to the powers that be that the status quo in the society is not good enough.

We have reached such a time in the United States of America. Bill Moyers quotes The Radicalism of the American Revolution by Gordon Wood:

"… our nation discovered its greatness "by creating a prosperous free society belonging to obscure people with their workaday concerns and pecuniary pursuits of happiness." This democracy, he said, changed the lives of "hitherto neglected and despised masses of common laboring people."

Unfortunately, the 1% of our population controlling 50% of our economy have turned away or forgotten this. In his article "How Wall Street Occupied America," found in the November 21, 2011 edition of The Nation, he points to a confidential memorandum published by former Supreme Court Justice Lewis Powell among his friends at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce on August 23, 1971. Moyers says, "We look on it now as a call to arms for class war waged from the top down."

It is warfare waged successfully and largely unnoticed by the Middle Class. Like the frog, which dies in a pot growing steadily warmer, the American people have had too many distractions to notice the heat rising on the American Dream. Most of these distractions provided happily by the 1%. Like the Caesars before them, they allowed us great spectacles like the National Football League and interminable sex scandals on television, part of the television wasteland, and they provided us with foreign wars to make us afraid to complain.

But, like the frog that jumps out of the pot when the heat rises too quickly, the Occupy Movement represents the American People's response to the fact that the 1% has literally gone too far. In 2011, the early signs of this discontent have come because of over reaching political attacks on collective bargaining rights in Wisconsin and Ohio, and attacks on the rights of women through state constitutional amendments.

The underlying assumptions of our Society and the American Dream must be fundamentally repaired before the genie of the Occupy Movement will go back into her bottle. Here are 10 ways the "Social Contract" is broken in the United States:

1. Home Values. Home ownership has long been the key to long-term prosperity for the American People. Homes paid for educations, retirements, and occasional vacations. Unfortunately, Wall Street was allowed to set aside regulations and add leverage upon leverage to the home mortgage market, which ultimately led to disaster. Now they are conspiring with real estate agents and appraisers to cram down home values, so that they can enjoy another 50-year run-up, primarily at the expense of the America People.

2. Loans for Education. A fundamental understanding of the American Dream has been that if we borrowed money to pay for college or community college education, we could expect a reasonable job at the end of it, which would allow us to build a family and a comfortable life for the next generation and ourselves. Now America's youth is facing an economy that has been eaten out by the 1%. As one of the writers on the web site known as "WeArethe99Percent" aptly put it, "The best and brightest of my generation are bagging your groceries."

3. Social Safety Nets in the Process of Destruction. The 1% is chiseling away at the social safety nets, which served and supported the American Dream for 75 years, since the Great Depression.

They are unwilling to pay their fair share for Social Security, putting the majority of the burden on average Americans, who earn significantly less than the $106,000 tax cap.

They have been destroying Medicare from the inside out. They have been consistently attacking the family doctor, by reducing Medicare payments to the point where few doctors accept Medicare any longer.

They want to destroy Medicaid, rather than face the fact that most modern industrialized countries provide healthcare for their populations in a dignified manner.

4. Labor Rights Are Being Destroyed. The American worker has spent a century fighting back the tycoons of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, who wanted below minimum wage labor for their enterprises. Now we have to do it again! It is understandable that unions must bargain with management for their salaries and benefits. That's the nature of a capitalist society. But the attack on the collective bargaining rights of public employees and union members is outrageous. Luckily, this is the one over reach that has caused the American people to wake up and jump out of the pot. It is clear that the "Social Contract" will not be fixed until American conservatives stop their unjustifiable attack on collective bargaining rights.

5. Untrustworthy Banking System. The conservative mantra has been, "Freedom, freedom, give us freedom." Removing all the stops on the financial regulatory system invited the global financial meltdown, which has destroyed the value of our homes and the future of our children. No, the Occupy Movement will continue until the banking industry accepts sensible regulation once again, like the banking regulations, which made the second half of the twentieth century so prosperous.

6. Patriarchy Run Rampant. When women have their rights we will have peace in the world. The days of keeping the little woman barefoot and pregnant at home are over. While women get equal rights lip service in the United States, the reality is far different.

Conservative politicians keep throwing the "family values" hogwash in women's faces. All of them know that criminalizing abortion will save exactly zero babies, and yet they keep hyping the issue to distract the American people from what they are doing to our financial system. This is only one example of how the 1% keeps many women in line.

7. Defense Spending Out of Control. The 1% used the standard tactic of fear mongering to run up the defense budget, and take money from programs that supported the American dream. Wars created on the basis of lies were the justification for increasing defense spending by over $300 billion per year. But where is all of that money going? A ballistic missile submarine costs about $2 billion, but we haven't built more than a handful in the decade of the run-up, and very few surface ships. We've added about 27,500 men to the U.S. Marine Corps, but even granting that it costs $100,000 per year to field a Marine, that amounts to only a total additional cost of $2.75 billion per year. Comparable increases in manpower in the other services yield similar financial consequences. I say again, "Where is all of that money going?"

8. First Amendment Rights Threatened. The Right of Assembly and the Right to Petition the Government for a Redress of Grievances are two of the five fundamental rights found in the 1st Amendment of the Constitution of the United States. How is it that states and local governments have been allowed to establish laws abridging those rights? This has to change! If we don't demand the reinstatement of these Rights, we can look forward to losing the Rights of Freedom of Religion, Freedom of the Press, and Freedom of Speech in the future.

9. Retirement Threatened. By destroying the value of our homes and trying to break our contract for Social Security—yes, Social Security is a contract not an "entitlement" (which is a 1% buzz word suggesting it's a handout). If they are allowed to continue, none of us will have any savings, nor will we have the safety net of Social Security, which so many of us rely upon. How Americans afford to retire is fundamental to fixing the "Social Contract" in our country. The Occupy Movement will continue until this is properly addressed. And that means making the 1% pay their fair share in Social Security and Medicare taxes.

10. Corrupt Attitude of Big Business. Over the past decade thousands of corrupt practices, many of them hugely costly to society, have crept into our society. Health insurance companies regularly deny legal and proper claims from doctors and hospitals over and over again. At the very minimum, they get to use the money owed to the doctors for a longer period, increasing their profits. Meanwhile, that creates additional administrative cost in our healthcare system.

I could go on and on with this topic, but I don't need to, because everyone reading this knows what I mean. We have to demand higher standards of ethics from the business community and our politicians, or see our Society devolve to the corrupt practices standards of the developing world. As an American I expect and demand better!

Early Menopause Signs/Symptoms Can Be Relieved

Early menopause signs, symptoms and complaints vary from one woman to the next, as does the age at which a woman begins to experience them. Menopause symtoms can be frustrating or challenging, but a positive attitude helps.

According to a survey conducted in September of 2006 by Johns Hopkins the menopause symtoms that significantly affect a woman's assessment of her quality of life are mood changes and feeling tense. The women who participated in the study were asked about hot flashes, vaginal dryness, sore joints, bladder control problems and headache, but, interestingly, the majority of the women did not feel that these symptoms affected their quality of life.

Mood changes that are commonly reported as early menopause signs, symptoms and complaints include increased feelings of frustration, irritability and sadness. Some women even experience mild depression for the first time in their lives. Women who have had problems with depression or anxiety in the past are even more susceptible to becoming depressed once again.

Doctors, scientists and researchers are not sure what causes depression during menopause. It could be related to changing hormonal levels. Women have a higher risk than men of experiencing a major depressive period at some point in their life. Most experts believe this is all related to the, sometimes drastically changing hormonal levels that accompany pregnancy, childbirth, monthly cycles and menopause. Symtoms of depression should always be discussed with your health care professional.

Many different therapies can reduce tension and stress. Most of them, you can do on your own, without prescription medication or hormone replacement therapy. Stress management techniques, such as deep breathing exercises, deep muscle relaxation and yoga can all relieve tension. As can regular exercise of any type. If you are not accustomed to regular exercise, it is always advisable to check with your doctor, particularly if you are overweight or have other health issues. In general, most women can safely begin an exercise regimen of 20 minutes, every other day, gradually increasing to 30 minutes every day.

Aerobic exercise is probably the best natural stress reliever. And, studies have shown that women who are under a great deal of unrelieved stress have more severe early menopause signs, symptoms and complaints. Chronic stress can, over time, lead to depression. Regular exercise can relieve depressed feelings and possible prevent the necessity of further treatment.

Some women begin to have early menopause signs, symptoms and complaints in their late thirties. Changes in menstrual periods and more severe premenstrual symptoms may be related to menopause. If a woman stops menstruating before the age of 40, it is considered premature menopause. Sometimes this happens naturally and may be a result of genetics. In other cases it is caused by treatment for a medical condition, such as removal of the ovaries due to cancer. Women who experience an unnatural premature menopause typically have more severe menopause symtoms and medication is often necessary.
