Identify the Causes of Clinical Depression


Depression is the condition where one feels sad or despondent. Most people don't really know the causes of depression and hence they can't safeguard themselves or their loved ones from it. Yet, it is important to know that depression is like any other disease that are caused by many factors. Depression has no single cause since it resulted from a combination of things.

Whatever its cause, depression is not just a state of mind. It is related to physical changes in the brain, and connected to imbalance neurotransmitter that carries signals in your brain and nerves. The causes of depression can be due to biological, hereditary or environmental.

Here are some of the causes of depression:

o Hereditary factors: Depression can be due to family genes that you inherit from your parent. Genetics play an important part in depression and it can run in families for generations.. However, it doesn't imply that you are bound to get it and it won't guarantee you from depression free lifestyle even if your family does not have any history of depression.

o Drugs and alcohol: Addicts are likely to suffer from major clinical depression. Though is was always ascertained that people contract this ailment and then resort to alcohol and drug abuse, in most cases its vice-versa.

o Certain medications: Some types of medicines can cause depression or worsen it further. Blood pressure drugs, sleeping pills, antibiotic medicines and some contraceptive pills can cause depression.

o Life Problems: Experiencing the loss of a loved one, a pink-slip, divorce, breakup etc can lead to mood swings and gradually trigger depression.

o Medical condition: Depression is perhaps the most obvious reaction to diseases, especially to the more sinister ones like Cancer, Tuberculosis and Diabetes.

o Personality: Individuals may have character traits that lead to depression. They have too much worry, pessimism, low self esteem and feelings of guilt and worthlessness. When people opt for an alienated lifestyle because of their hypersensitivity or perceived exclusion from the society, the chances of depression increase.

o Insufficient zinc: Low amounts of zinc in the diet can lead to having excessive copper levels. It will result in low moods and insomnia that leads to depression.

o Gender: Women are more likely to suffer from depression than men, the reason for this is that women's hormones play an important part with a battle of constant changes can make women feel like she's on a roundabout, not knowing when to exit.

Knowing the causes alone will not safeguard you or your loved ones from depression. By adopting healthy lifestyle, happy relationship and keeping in touch with God will decrease the chances of depression.
